I recently discovered that I've been cheating myself by not reading Ben Avuyah's longer posts. I've had him blogrolled basically forever, but I'd been skipping the long ones. Big mistake. It's really great stuff.
Although his upbringing was much more "ultra-Orthodox" than mine, I recognize much of my own past in his writing.
My non-Jewish readers might find it an interesting window into the life of an ultra-Orthodox teenaged boy.

Thank you for the link, JA, I appreciate it.
To tell you the truth, I had been inspired by your blog, and the way you debate serious science with peoples of varying opinions and backgrounds. To my eye, the staunchly creationist arguments are usualy rooted in poor basic science training.
My parents are coming this passover, and I asked them to unearth my old Biology texts from college, and bring them over so I can have them for reference. Perhaps the blogosphere could use an episode of the, "Memoirs of a college Bio major"...
I admit to not having a science backround that goes any further than what I needed to graduate highschool.
(grin)
Ben Avuyah,

Thanks. :-) It's fun to talk about the basics of science.

I agree. They have also mostly come from backgrounds where they weren't taught that theistic evolution is an option so they're afraid that if they accept evolution, they have to give up God. Despite that being my own path, there are many religious people who accept evolution, including for example the whole Catholic Church and almost half of all Americans.

Sadie Lou,
I actually learned what I know mostly by my own reading. I didn't take any significant science classes after high school either.
Yeah, I am not nor have I ever been Jewish but his yeshiva misfit posts are both enlightening and extremely enjoyable; I am eager for more!
They are loooooooooong posts...
Simon:
You've got to think of them as (nonfiction) short stories rather than blog posts. I printed a couple of them out to read.
