I think Thanksgiving should be an occasion for fasting, not overindulgence. That would really teach us to give thanks.

i think he just means being happy for what you have, rather than thanking a specific being.
Maybe we should be unhappy we don't have more?
well that's not in the spirit of the holiday, now is it.
